‘Poetry of Painting’ Exhibit at Wagner’s Galleries
shfap owner curates show by artists Dudley, Saniga
Editor’s note: We’ve previously covered the unveiling of their state-of-the-art video display for Hameline Field at Wagner College stadium. This new display will help elevate the game-day experience for fans of college sports.
From their website about the exhibit:
“Arcadia”, an exhibition at Wagner College’s Union Gallery, features works by painters Abigail Dudley and E.M. Saniga. The artists, whose friendship began with a landscape residency on Saniga’s historic Pennsylvania farm, explore the poetry of observation in their paintings. Dudley, known for her atmospheric color and blurred compositions, contrasts with Saniga’s naturalistic landscapes. Curated by Steven Harvey, “Arcadia” opens on November 13 and runs through February 7, 2025.
The exhibition is accompanied by a PDF album featuring an essay by art critic John Yau, adding insight into the artists’ work, themes, and unique styles. In a recent review, Yau describes Dudley’s paintings as “a synthesis of the seen and the imagined,” capturing a wonderful, dream-like quality. STATEN ISLAND — Wagner College’s art galleries host “Arcadia,” an exhibit of painters Abigail Dudley and EM Saniga.
These artists are friends of different ages and backgrounds. Saniga offers a landscape residency to students at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art to work outdoors on his 18th century farm in rural Pennsylvania. Dudley won the residency grant in 2021. Since then, they have become friends — even painting together in Italy.
They share a sensibility arrived at via very different lives. Their commonality has to do with the poetry of painting derived from looking. Both artists work from observation, yet seeing is a starting point in their work; their paintings often develop independently from the motif.
The exhibit is curated by Steven Harvey, owner of the shfap gallery in Manhattan.
The Union Gallery is open Monday through Sunday, 7 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., through Feb. 7 on the main floor of Union Hall, Wagner College, One Campus Road. The Spotlight Gallery is open through Feb. 1 in the Horrmann Library, next door to Union. They are free and open to the public. (Note that the college is closed for winter break Dec. 21 through Jan. 1.)
