NYC Kids RISE Save For College Program Now At New World Preparatory Charter School
New World Preparatory Charter School Welcome Families to the Save for College Program with an NYC Scholarship Month Celebration and Workshop in Port Richmond
The New World Preparatory Charter School community joins schools across the city celebrating a significant milestone: more than 282,000 public school students with more than $42 million invested across their NYC Scholarship Accounts for their future college and career training
Editor’s note: We’ve reported on the NYC Kids RISE Save For College Program several times in the past, including last year’s review and having an interview with Debra Ellen-Glickstein, the executive director and founder of the program.
On Thursday, January 30th in Port Richmond, Staten Island, New World Preparatory Charter School hosted an NYC Scholarship Month celebration and workshop for parents and guardians of students with NYC Scholarship Accounts through the NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program. Family Coordinator Mildred Curley led the workshop to celebrate with NYC Kids RISE and the school community how New World Preparatory Charter School students are among the more than 282,000 public school students citywide with more than $42 million now invested across their NYC Scholarship Accounts, invested in a NY 529 Direct Plan for their future college and career training. Across Staten Island, more than 17,000 students have nearly $1.9 million invested across their NYC Scholarship Accounts for college and career training.
Across the five boroughs, schools celebrated NYC Scholarship Month this January — the opportunity for new families to activate and view their children’s NYC Scholarship Accounts for the very first time at nyckidsrise.org/activate. As part of their college and career readiness efforts, schools like New World Preparatory Charter School host events, workshops, and educational activities so that families know their children already have a resource for their educational futures. Each student’s account starts with an initial $100 seed investment and there are opportunities to earn more over time, building on this financial asset for higher education expenses and encouraging students to dream big about the future.
During the presentation about the Save for College Program, the New World Preparatory Charter School team worked with families to activate and view their students’ NYC Scholarship Accounts and learn about how they can work together to support their children’s college and career goals, starting as early as kindergarten. Families learned how they can receive up to $175 in additional rewards for their child’s NYC Scholarship Account when they complete steps in the Program — when they activate the account, open their own college and career savings account, and start saving their own money in the ways and amounts that make sense for them.
At the New World Preparatory Charter School, 291 students have NYC Scholarship Accounts with more than $29,400 already invested for their college and career futures. Students can also receive additional funds in their NYC Scholarship Accounts through Community Scholarships, contributions to groups of accounts from local businesses, community organizations, and neighbors.
NYC Kids RISE has provided schools with toolkits, digital and print materials, outreach tools, and additional resources available in multiple languages to encourage families to activate their child’s NYC Scholarship Account and take other steps in the Program. For support with activating and viewing their child’s account, families can reach out to their school, attend an upcoming virtual workshop at nyckidsrise.org/events, email NYC Kids RISE at [email protected], or call the NYC Kids RISE hotline at 833-543-7473.
