Limitless Monday – Don’t Let Memories Die With You
Limitless Monday – Don’t let memories die with you
While writing my article about the long lost martial art of Kateda, it inspired a thought.
If I hadn’t written about this special memory, it would have probably died with me. That’s a little sad considering it occupied 3 years of my adult life and was an important influence in forming important aspects of my character.
There are some memories of events you probably want to die with. Like the time I lived with a prostitute to avoid capture by the Moroccan police. Sometimes desperate times lead to desperate measures, my friends!
There are other memories that are not particularly important, and as a result have probably been consigned to the bottom of the memory bank.
The memories I am talking about in this article are the ones that define us. Experiences that demonstrate who we are. You may not feel totally comfortable about handing these stories down to the next generation, but you must bite the bullet.
In my case, the untold prostitute story has more longevity than the long lost martial arts adventure, for all the wrong reasons. It’s not a story I am particularly proud of, but it does demonstrate the lengths I would go to secure my freedom. It also shows my resourcefulness while under immense pressure.
Your story may be one of overcoming a drug or other addiction problem. It could be a tale of a hard lesson learned charting your downfall, punishment, and resurrection. Or it could simply be a story of career success or a past love.
These experiences demonstrate the kind of person you are and should be shared. The question here is: how do we carve these memories into stone so that they can be exchanged with others?
You can choose to do what I do every week and write about them, your thoughts and pearls of wisdom. It’s not hard these days to create a blog and share a few articles with your loved ones and beyond.
Most people decide to share their tales with their family and friends through old fashioned word of mouth. I am sure there are many stories that I failed to extract from my own parents and grandparents that could have provided other generations with some light entertainment and much needed wisdom.
You could share your life stories, wisdom, or adventures by making a video blog or writing a book. Perhaps it could be the start of a new career as an influencer or author, stranger things have happened…
Teaching is a great way to share your experiences and wisdom.
You are never too young to share your own stories. I am sure we can all learn a thing or three from our own children.
By sharing experiences with our loved ones and them with us, we get to understand what drives and inspires them. Significantly how that could impact our own life and the direction it is headed.
This new information could lead us to the conclusion that perhaps our lives are due for a reset. Maybe our current course is headed directly into a brick wall or through a set of heavy steel doors.
Your new found knowledge could allow you to adjust your path before it’s too late. Remember, information is king, wherever it comes from.
I’ll finish with a short tribute to George Foreman, the boxer and entrepreneur who died recently. In 1987 he decided to make a comeback, announcing that he had set himself a three year plan to become the World Heavyweight Champion, again. He did it in seven.
These are the kinds of stories that are worth sharing. Experiences that will make your hair stand on end and get you up at 5am every morning chasing the dream.
Happy Monday!
