Editor’s note: Senator Scarcella-Spanton’s bill to allow active-duty military members and their families to receive the property tax discount to which everyone else is entitled. She is also working to have assigned liaisons in state agencies to help veterans get the benefits they need and are supposed to receive. She also stood with Senator Gillibrand to announce legislation to address the epidemic of traumatic brain injuries among servicemembers, usually from firing their own weapons.
BROOKLYN, NY – Today, Senator Jessica Scarcella-Spanton proudly joined military leaders, elected officials, and veterans’ advocates for the unveiling of the Fort Hamilton Veterans Memorial Highway sign at the 92nd Street Verrazzano Narrows Bridge Overpass (this is on the Brooklyn side).
The Fort Hamilton Veterans Memorial Highway designation recognizes U.S. Army Garrison Fort Hamilton as an integral part of Brooklyn’s military history. As the last active-duty military installation in New York City, Fort Hamilton continues to play a crucial role in national defense, community engagement, and veteran support. This designation, made possible by the passage of her legislation, Senate Bill S9764, which was signed into law by Governor Hochul, pays tribute to the brave men and women of Fort Hamilton and the surrounding military community who have dedicated their lives to defending our nation.
Senator Scarcella-Spanton was joined by Assembly Member Alec Brook-Krasny, USAG Fort Hamilton Commander Colonel Melissa Cantwell, Raymond Aalbue of the United Military Veterans of Kings County, Lieutenant Colonel David Ryan of the National Guard, veterans from across Brooklyn, and representatives from New York State Department of Transportation Region 11 to commemorate this significant moment.
“Brooklyn has long had a strong military presence, and I am honored to represent the active-duty service members and veterans who call this community home. The veterans of Southern Brooklyn have not only served with valor, but they have also made tremendous sacrifices for this country. Time and again, they have put their duty above all else, and their service did not end when they returned to civilian life.
“I am incredibly proud that my legislation designated the Fort Hamilton Veterans Memorial Highway as a lasting tribute to our veterans, for generations to come. Veterans across Brooklyn deserve to be recognized not just for time served, but for the impact they continue to make right here at home,” said Senator Scarcella-Spanton.
“Without our veterans, we would have nothing of the life we take for granted every day in this country. Yet, it is far too often the case that they receive little or no recognition for the invaluable sacrifices they have made. The designation of this section of road as Fort Hamilton Veterans Memorial Highway is only a fraction of the show of gratitude our veterans deserve. It will, nonetheless, be a momentous occasion, since it is one very big step in the right direction which I am deeply honored to have helped us take,” said Assembly Member Alec Brook-Krasny.
“The dedication of the Fort Hamilton Veterans Memorial Parkway arrives at a meaningful moment as Fort Hamilton enters its Bicentennial year. The parkway stands as a tribute not only to those who served at Fort Hamilton, but to every veteran across New York City’s five boroughs. It represents our commitment to honoring all who have worn our nation’s uniform and serves as a lasting reminder of the deep connection between our military and the communities we serve” said USAG Fort Hamilton Commander Col Melissa Cantwell.
