On Staten Island This June, Celebrate Pride Month With Municipal Arts Society Of New York, Pride Center Of Staten Island, Alice Austen House

Editor’s note: The Mayor’s Office last year honored Pride Month with new installations in the City Hall rotunda and Gracie Mansion that were created by LGBTQ+ artists.  From their Enduring Culture Initiative page, the following are the goals of this program:

The Enduring Culture Initiative’s Goals:

● Lay the groundwork for an expanded field of historic preservation that is more inclusive, equitable, and supportive of multivocal perspectives.
● Support community-based organizations in their efforts to tell and preserve their stories and sites.
● Elevate sites of cultural significance connected to underrepresented histories.
● Advocate for legislation, policies, and programs that will help preserve and maintain sites of historic and cultural significance, while also contributing to citywide climate and housing goals.

Join the Municipal Art Society of New York (MAS) and Pride Center of Staten Island on Wednesday, June 4th from 10:00am-1:00 PM at the Alice Austen House Museum for an Enduring Culture Spotlight celebrating Staten Island Pride.  

This interactive event celebrates the queer histories of Staten Island, from the legacy of barrier-breaking photographer Alice Austen (1866-1952) to the stories of Staten Island’s LGBTQ+ communities today. Together, we will take a guided tour of the museum grounds using polaroid cameras to capture our identities and memories in relation to the space. Afterwards, we will share and reflect on how these photographs continue the long tradition of documenting personal histories to tell a broader story about community and place. Refreshments will be provided. 

This event is part of MAS’ Enduring Culture Initiative, a multi-year effort that aims to expand New York City’s approach to preservation; to protect and celebrate more of the places, cultural activities, and histories that make our neighborhoods and communities unique.
