MENENDEZ, AOC, BOOKER, CASAR TO DISCUSS JOINT EFFORT URGING REVERSAL OF TITLE 42 EXPANSION AND PROPOSED ASYLUM TRANSIT BAN

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Thursday, January 26 at 10:00 AM, Senators Bob Menendez (D-N.J.), Cory Booker (D-N.J.), and Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.-14) and Greg Casar (D-Texas-35) will discuss a joint effort on recent border policies announced by the Biden Administration.

Earlier this month, the President announced two policies that create new restrictions on the right to seek asylum at the border, circumventing domestic and international law. First, they announced an immediate expansion of Title 42 beyond what was required by the courts. Human rights groups have documented more than 10,000 violent attacks, including kidnappings and deaths, among migrants who have been expelled back to Mexico since President Biden’s term began.

Second, their proposed rulemaking to create a new transit ban is an unlawful attempt to rewrite our asylum laws without Congress. A transit ban that requires migrants to seek humanitarian protections in a third country means the most vulnerable migrants fleeing persecution and torture will effectively be unable to seek asylum in the United States.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

In January of 2019, Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez was sworn-in as the youngest woman and youngest Latina ever to serve in Congress. Her first piece of legislation was the Green New Deal resolution, which envisions a 10-year national mobilization, akin to FDR’s New Deal, that would put millions to work in good-paying, union jobs repairing the nation’s infrastructure, reducing air and water pollution, and fighting the intertwined economic, social, racial and climate crises crippling the country.
