Editor’s note: Readers recently learned more about trends related to self-storage, and that more residents are planning to rent storage space to make up for their reduced buying power when it comes to space in relation to rent. It can seem like a good plan to rent a self-storage unit for these extra items, but it should be remembered that different rules apply to stored items than to items in one’s home, including rent obligations and property possession rights for the storage unit management. Staten Island’s residents also tend to go against the grain of the rest of New York City in terms of homeownership, including having a higher proportion of couples than the other boroughs along with the lowest proportion of non-relative (roommate) co-ownership households citywide.
Regarding the owner, Joe, we asked: Is Joe a native Staten Islander, or how long has he lived here? What does he like best about this borough?
A: Joe has lived in Staten Island for about 40 years.
He feels Staten Island is great for many reasons: It has a deep-rooted history, we have a very diverse culture and we are known as the borough of parks; it’s a great place to raise a family.
